Within Scrum you ensure constant improvements. To do so with your team you can use this easy Retrospective exercise.

Here is a simple retrospective exercise (different than 4L’s) that can be used to reflect on the team’s performance and identify areas for improvement:

  1. Divide the team into small groups of 3-9 people.
  2. Give each group a stack of index cards and pens.
  3. Have each team member write down one thing that went well during the last sprint and one thing that could be improved upon on separate index cards. Encourage them to be specific and to focus on actions rather than personalities.
  4. After a set amount of time (e.g., 20 minutes), have each group present their cards to the rest of the team.
  5. As a team, discuss and group the cards into common themes. For example, all the cards that relate to communication could be grouped together.
  6. For each theme, have the team brainstorm and write down potential actions that could be taken to address the issue. Encourage the team to come up with specific, actionable steps that can be taken in the next sprint.
  7. Choose one or two action items to focus on in the next sprint and assign them to specific team members to lead.
  8. At the end of the next sprint, review the action items to see if they have made a positive impact and repeat the retrospective process to continue improving.

This exercise can be modified to suit the needs and goals of the team. The key is to practice reflecting on past performance in a constructive and proactive way, and to identify specific actions that can be taken to improve.
